There are rules we must follow when spelling the plural form of nouns.

1) For nouns that end with a vowel and the letter y, we add s.
Example: alley – alleys

2) For nouns that end with a consonant and the letter y, we change y to ies.
Example: baby – babies

3) For nouns that end with a vowel then the letter o, we add s.
Example: studio – studios

4) For nouns that end with a consonant then the letter o, we add es.
Example: potato – potatoes

5) For most nouns ending with f or fe, we replace the ending with ves.
Example: leaf – leaves

6) For nouns that end with s, x, sh or ch, add es.
Example: kiss – kisses, box – boxes, wish – wishes, witch – witches

NOTE: These are only some ways of forming the plural. We can also form it by:

  • changing the vowel
  • changing the word
  • adding en
  • leaving the word the same.
