Many learners need more than the traditional “chalk and talk” method to reach their full potential. This is especially true for students with neurodivergent conditions such as ADHD, autism or dyslexia. Innovative and inclusive approaches to education ensure that every learner receives the support they need, regardless of their strengths and challenges. In this post, we’ll explore eight strategies you can implement to cater to your learner’s needs.
1. Colour-Coded Organisation
Use colour-coded systems to organise school materials, notes and assignments. Each subject or category can be assigned a specific colour.
2. Visual Schedules
Create visual schedules outlining daily routines and tasks. Use images or symbols alongside text to represent activities, transitions and breaks.
3. Mind Maps and Graphic Organisers
Use mind mapping and graphic organisers to brainstorm ideas, organise information and outline assignments.
4. Multisensory Learning Activities
Lead learners in activities that engage their different senses. For example, watching educational videos, singing, using beads for counting and role-playing scenarios can all be used to engage the different senses.
5. Peer Support and Collaboration
Encourage peer tutoring, cooperative learning activities and collaborative projects to provide opportunities for students to learn from and support one another.
6. Positive Reinforcement and Motivation
Recognise and celebrate your learner’s efforts and achievements using positive reinforcement, such as verbal praise and rewards, to reinforce desired behaviours and encourage engagement.
7. Regular Communication and Feedback
Maintain open lines of communication with parents, educators and other stakeholders to gather feedback, address concerns and make adjustments to support your learner’s needs effectively.
8. Flexible Seating Arrangements
Create a study environment that allows your learner to choose seating options that best support their preferences and needs, such as standing desks, bean bags or fidget tools.
