Happy Independence Day!
We hope you’re enjoying the last weekend before the new school year begins. If your child is entering Standard 5, they may already be feeling the pressure of SEA looming ahead. While you may be just as anxious, it’s important to focus on supporting their overall well-being. Here’s how you can help them find balance as this school year begins:
1. Create a healthy routine.
Establish a regular study schedule, but be sure to balance it with time for relaxation. For example, after 1-2 hours of studying, let your child unwind with a hobby or a short outdoor activity. Also, ensure they get the recommended 9-12 hours of sleep each night. It may seem like a lot, but remember that a well-rested mind is more focused and less stressed.
2. Encourage frequent breaks.
Make sure your child takes 5-10 minute breaks after every 30-45 minutes of studying. You can use a stopwatch or timer to help with this. During these breaks, they can stretch, take deep breaths, or play a quick game to boost their mood and energy levels.
3. Promote a positive mindset.
Focus on your child’s effort, not just the results. Celebrate their hard work and progress, not only their grades. This reduces the pressure to be perfect and encourages them to keep trying, even when things get tough.
4. Maintain open communication.
Check in with your child regularly. Ask them how they’re feeling about school, both academically and emotionally. Create a safe space where they feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings without fear of criticism and punishment. If they seem overwhelmed, work with them to find solutions, like breaking tasks into smaller steps or adjusting their study schedule.
5. Balance school with hobbies and extracurriculars.
Some parents cut out extracurricular activities when their children enter Standard 5 to focus on exam preparation. Still, encourage your child to keep participating in hobbies and activities they enjoy, as these can provide a healthy outlet for stress and help them recharge. Just be sure not to overload their schedule.
6. Monitor their social and emotional well-being.
Watch out for signs of stress in your child. If they seem anxious, have trouble sleeping, become irritable, or withdraw from activities, it’s time to step in. Listen to them without judgment and offer reassurance. Help them develop coping strategies, like relaxation techniques or regular breaks. If the stress persists or worsens, seek help from a mental health professional.
Balancing academics and well-being during Standard 5 is essential for your child’s success. By creating a supportive and structured environment at home, you can help your child navigate the year confidently and successfully.
